Odisha witnessed severe thunderstorms and rainfall due to Kalbaisakhi, bringing relief from the scorching heat but causing significant destruction across multiple districts. The intense storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hailstorms, has impacted several areas, including Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts.
In Mayurbhanj, as many as 17 panchayats and hundreds of villages have suffered extensive damage. Houses with asbestos and tiled roofs have collapsed, glass windows of vehicles have shattered, and roads remain waterlogged. Similarly, Keonjhar district has also faced the wrath of the storm, with reports of fallen trees and damaged infrastructure.
Brahmapur experienced relentless rainfall, leaving streets submerged. Meanwhile, hailstorms struck various parts of the state, including Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, causing panic among residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Warning for 12 districts, predicting more storms in the next 24 hours.
The sudden and intense storm turned villages into disaster zones, with fallen rooftops, destroyed houses, and damaged vehicles painting a grim picture. Many villagers in Mayurbhanj’s Rairangpur sub-division are struggling with the aftermath, demanding compensation for their losses. Protests have erupted as affected residents blocked roads, urging authorities for immediate relief.
As Odisha braces for more turbulent weather, authorities have advised people to stay indoors, avoid sheltering under trees, and take necessary precautions.
