Berhampur, Callous attitude by various authorities,several projects constructed by spending huge amounts,left idle at various places across Ganjam district.One such project,a underground sump was constructed at Khaspa street in Berhampur,to provide safe drinking water to the people in the area.It also served for more than a decade,but remained unused since over half a decade.In 2007 the sump at an cost of Rs 46 lakhs was constructed in 2007,when Odisha was rulled by BJD-BJP coalition ministry.The sump was inaugurated by former CM Naveen patnaik in the presence of former UD minister and present Dy CM,K.B.Singdeo,former union minister Chandrasekhar sahu and others.Pipeline from Dakhinpur reservoir connected to the sump.With a capacity of 1.80 lakh liter capacity sump was supplying to over 20 streets with a population of over 50,000 people.However,the sump left unused,after the excution of Janibili mega water supply to Berhampur.The sump at the centre of the Khaspa street exists,but not used.Incidently,despite water supply from Janibili project and excution of 24×7 water supply,the people in Berhampur receives around one and half hour water supply per day.Even sometimes the water supply disrupted due to power supply disruption.If the sump will be used,the area can receive water at the time of scarcity said former corporator of the area Badri nayak.Moreover,this year,water scarcity is likely to prevail in the district,as all the reservoirs,even waterbodies too has little water due to lack of adequate rain,what may aggravate the scarcity in coming hot days. On the otherhand WATCO General manager Bikash padhy said the sump was constructed by BeMC and managed by PHED.As the sump is in working condition,the matter would be placed before the administration,said Padhy.
