LONG WALK FOR EVERY DROP OF WATER

Paralakhemundi,(Tarini Prasad Panda): As the summer sun begins to cast its relentless blaze over Gajapati, a silent crisis deepens—one that flows not with abundance, but with scarcity. In the heart of Rayagada block lies Lailai village, where thirst has become a daily trial and survival, a weary journey.
Here, over a thousand souls dwell under the shadow of dry wells and fading hope. Though three tube wells stand as symbols of promise, they yield water unfit for use—turning lifelines into mere relics of neglect. With no other recourse, villagers tread a rugged two-kilometre path to a distant hill stream, carrying vessels and burdens alike, just to gather a few precious drops.
This stream, though a giver of life, bears its own curse. Its untreated waters have, time and again, sown seeds of illness among the villagers, making survival a delicate balance between thirst and health.
Voices of distress have reached our district correspondent, as residents plead for urgent administrative intervention. Their appeal is simple yet profound—water that is safe, accessible, and humane.
Efforts to seek a response from the district’s Rural Water Supply authorities remained unanswered, as the silence of a Sunday mirrored the silence of dry wells.
In Lailai, every drop tells a story—of struggle, endurance, and an unyielding hope that someday, relief will flow closer to home.
