Paralakhemundi,(Tarini Prasad Panda): In a moment of pride for Odisha’s literary and historical fraternity, noted scholar and veteran writer Purnachandra Mohapatra has received statewide recognition as his acclaimed historical work “Parala Lalam: First Freedom Movement from South Odisha” has been included in the Class VIII History syllabus of Government High Schools in Odisha.
The epic volume vividly narrates the early resistance movements against British rule from South Odisha long before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The book highlights the united struggle of Dora, Bisoyi and Soura communities who courageously confronted British forces, with special mention of freedom fighter Hanu Pradhan from Gajapati district who joined the resistance as a soldier.
Educationists and literary personalities have hailed the inclusion of the book in the school curriculum as a historic step towards acquainting students with the forgotten freedom struggle and rich heritage of the region.
Despite nearing the age of 90, scholar Purnachandra Mohapatra continues to inspire young generations through his powerful literary works and historical research. He has been honoured from various quarters for his immense contribution to Odia literature and heritage documentation.
President Awardee teacher Binod Chandra Jena remarked that Purnachandra Mohapatra’s writings are unparalleled treasures of literature and history. Litterateur Bichitranand Bebarta described the work as a remarkable discovery preserving the significance of Odisha’s past, while State Awardee teacher Pramod Chandra Padhi said generations of readers and writers continue to learn from the scholar’s vibrant literary legacy.
