FACTIONALISM ACUTE IN GANJAM UNIT BJD

Berhampur,20th Jan, Feud between two factions of Biju Janata Dal (BJD)corporators in Berhampur Municipal Corporation(BeMC)has reached police,as the BJD leaders failed to solve a dispute between a corporator and husband of a woman corporator.Incidently both are of BJD.The complaint Nilakantha sahu corporator of wardno-27 in a written complaint to Gosaninuagaon police in the city has alleged that on 19/1/2025 Durga panda husband of corporator of ward no-14 abused him for no reason with threaten of dire consequences.Nilakantha fearing danger to his life has appealed the police for immediate action. While the BeMC Maayr Sanghamitra dalai said so far no allegation reached her,Ganjam district BJD President Dr R.C.Choupatnaik described the matter aspersonal, however steps are taken to sortout the differences between them.On the otherhand,Nilakantha said despite a dedicated activist of BJD,the matter was apprised to higherups and as no steps were taken I lodged complaint with police.Meanwhile, police asked Nilakantha and Durga to come to PS.Sources said, factionalism was in the Ganjam district BJD unit since long. The BJD,while in power has opened its door for leaders of other political parties and several industed into the BJD.But since than, the loyalists of BJD sidelined and inducted leaders of other parties dominated the show. The differences deepened further, soon after the debacle of BJD,in the last general election.Though the fort of BJD crumbled, but the BeMC,with absolute majority is still run by BJD.But acute factionalism between the corporators affected the development works in the BeMC limits, badly.Even it became a regular feature between the two groups to issue statements against each other.Out of 42 wards in BeMC, BJD has 36, BJP-3, Congress-1 and Independent-2. While one faction of BJD corporators is led by Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei and supported by Ganjam BJD president R.C.Chaupatnaik, the other group is supported by former Berhampur MLA Bikram Kumar Panda. Both the factions claim to have support of 26 to 27 BJD corporators.Twentyfive BJD corporators had recently come together and openly opposed Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei and BeMC commissioner B.S.Mishra.The even submitted a grievance letter submitted to the Chief Minister through Ganjam Collector Dibya Jyoti Parida, alleging illigal payment to a delisted trust. They alleged that, this was done without the consent of the Collector, state government, or the corporators’ council.Expressing their apprehension, the corporators said that for the payment, funds of other schemes might be diverted, which needs a thorough enquire. They further alleged that, the MPLAD and MLALAD funds alloted for developmental works including pond renovation didnot takenup, even the tenders floated for construction of drains frequently cancelled. As a result of which santitation system in the city is in distress. The corporators accused the BeMC authorities of monopoly and unruly behaviour, what humilated the corporators by their respective voters.Following the incident of groupism, last month BJD Supremo Naveen called all the 36 corpora-tors of BeMC for a discussion to sort out the differences. But the rift in the BJD in Ganjam continued, rather aggravated.Contrary to the allegations of the corporators,Mayor Sanghamitra said no corporator placed any matter before her for discussion. She said everything, including the payment done as per the law. When asked about the groupism, she claimed her ignorance and said soon the council meeting would be held and if any dispute or grievence arises would be solved soon. She said garbages in the city are being cleaned and no deviation will be tolerated. When asked about covering of open drains in city has already been tendered and work is on.However, the reality is different in city. After the death of a minor boy in a open drain in august last year, the BeMC announced to coverup the drains with slabs in a warfooting. But tilldate open drains exist in several areas, with bamoo baricade.Even the long patch infront of SBR women`s college is the burning example.Similarly, claim of regular cleaning of drains also proved false as the drains full of garbages what the drain near medical college. The infiting between the corporators forced the denizens to suffer for their no fault said legal luminaries like Jyoti prasad chotroy,Promod Sahu. They said,as such Ganjam is prone for bloodshed for political reasons. Now the organisational election for different posts of BJD slated and as the factionalism continued in the party, the posibility of clashes between the factions of the regional party cannot be rulledout opined the political observers.
