Berhampur: Baidyanathpur police in Berhampur has nabbed a seven persons including six women of a ornament snatchers gang today.On 8/2/2025 gold chain of a aged woman was stolen,while she was offering prayer at Jagannath temple at Courtpeta in the city.During investigation basing on CCTV footage,police detained one Parvati nayak(55)of Cuttack and also recovered the snatched gold chain from her possession.Parvati was forwarded to court and till date she is in jail.However,police kept a surveilance on the persons who reaches the jail to meet Parvati in a car.Since the persons who visited the jail to meet her,includes women,police started investigation and from the registration number of the car,which was traced at Cuttack.Yesterday a police team reached Cuttack and nabbed one Bijay jena(28)owner of the car.During interrogation Bijay revealed about the members of the gang.Their modus operandi is to target crowded temples on special auspicious occasions and target elderly women wearing gold chains. Even if the neck is covered they would lift the saree and cut the chain using cutter and quickly pass it on to other gang women. They used a Travera car for their movement whose owner and driver is accused Bijaya Jena(28).During interrogation of accused Bijaya it came to light that a gang of women of different areas stays at Cuttack and committed the crime led by Parvati(now in jail).Bijay further confessed that,he used to take the women accompanied Parvati to different place of Odisha including,Berhampur, Puri, Dhenkanal, Jagatsingpur, Paradeep, Khurda, Jajapur, Bhubaneswar, Bhanjanagar to commit Chain snatching. After committing snatching, they returned back to Cuttack in the car(Travera)and shared the money after selling the gold.For this purpose Bijay also gets a share of the money.On 08.02.2025 morning as per their plan he came to Berhampur with his Travera car bringing the women and dropped at different places of Berhampur.They went to different temples where huge number of devotees were gathered.When Parvati was apprehended by police,Bijay took the rest women to Cuttack immediately.Basing on his confession the police team nabbed six women,Nagu Behera(46), S.Puspa(50), Basanti Rao(62),Mina Rao(43),H.Puspa(50) and Sabita Sahu(32).Police also seized the Travera ,snatched gold chains,cash of Rs 25K,cutter etc.Today the six were brought to Berhampur and forwarded to court.
