Berhampur, Pongal the auspecious festival of telugu community celebrated across southern districts today with usual pomp and gaiety.The three day celebrations kicked off with Bhogi(bonfire).People in villages and urban areas in the southern region began the day with Bhogi and prayers.Men, women and children were seen playing and dancing around the bonfire.Braving chilling cold,sizable population in Southern districts,gathered at fire pits to offer puja before lit fire.Rangoli,traditional bonfire and cultural shows marked the beginning of the Pongal festival,celebrated by the Telugu community, across southern districts including Berhampur.The first day of the harvest festival was celebrated as ‘Bhogi’,where in Odias also joined the Telugu community in celebrating the festival.“Sankranti Sambaraalu is a traditional harvest festival which is celebrated to enlighten the younger generation.It’s the biggest festival of Telugu people and they celebrate it across the country,” said P Satya Narayana,a local.Berhampur MP,Pradeep panigrahy attended the celebration of ‘Sankranti Sambaraalu’,organised by the Andhra Bhashabhivardhani Samajam (ABS).Similarly the BeMC Mayor Sanghamitra dalai too joined the programme held separetedly.In the evening,the ABS and other telugu literary and caltural assosiations,organised several caltural programmes at Nilakanthanagar in the city.On the occasion,popular Telugu and Kannada actor P Sai kumar was felicitated by ABS.Besides Berhampur,the festival was also celebrated in Gopalpur, Chatrapur, Chikiti, Patrapur, Aska and Bhanjanagar in Ganjam and other southern districts including Gajapati and Rayagada.Srinivas Rajana,a member of the ABS said,the Bhogi symbolises burning of evil.Earlier,burning of old and unwanted items like old clothes, mats and broom sticks in the belief that new things would be ushered into their lives,but with the passing of time,woods replaced them.
