ADULT ELEPHANT ELECTROCUTED

Berhampur, An adult female elephant was found dead in a forest at boarder of Digapahandi-Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district today morning.Sources said,the carcass of the pachyderm was first spotted by the villagers near Dhepaguda village,who then informed the forest officials.Preliminary investigation revealed that the elephant died due to electrocution after coming in contact with a live wire.The sources said a 7 member elephant herd was staying in Harina hill under Pudamari forest range.The herd often reach the crop fields and ate the crops.To check the herd,the farmers believedly tied wire and connected power supply,as wire marks visible on its trunk.Receiving the information RCCF,S.Swain,Berhampur DFO Sunny khokkar with veterinary surgeons and electricity officials reached the spot.After postmortem the cascass was burried at the spot.DFO,Khkkar confirming the death of the elephant by electrocution,said the dead female elephant is in between 35 to 40 year old.Some wires were seized from the spot and further investigation is on.The pachyderm was part of a large herd,but the elephant was alone at the area,what confirmed from the circumstantial evidences.
